The 1 oz American Gold Eagle Coin 2025 is the most traded US bullion coin in the world, issued continuously by the United States Mint since 1986. The coin contains exactly one troy ounce of pure gold (31.1035 g) in a 22-karat Crown Gold alloy with silver and copper - total mass 33.930 g with excellent mechanical durability. Face value: 50 USD, US legal tender.

Eagle is a pillar of the global bullion market - 500,000 to 1 million pieces sold annually. At GoldInvest24 we offer only authorised US Mint coins in protective capsules. See also our gold investment coins.

Bullion Coin Act 1985 - the birth of the Eagle

The American Gold Eagle was created by the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 (Public Law 99-185), signed by President Ronald Reagan on December 17, 1985. Strategic goal: reclaim the global gold investment market for US citizens after decades of Krugerrand dominance (import banned from 1985 due to apartheid sanctions). First coin struck October 7, 1986.

The 22-karat alloy choice was intentional - a tribute to the British Crown Gold standard from 1300, used for centuries in English and American circulating coins (Sovereign, Double Eagle).

Market analysis - Eagle as global liquidity leader

The American Gold Eagle is the most traded bullion coin worldwide. In 2024, sales exceeded 760,000 1 oz pieces (US Mint reports). This volume secures unmatched secondary-market liquidity.

Constructively Eagle differs from Buffalo, Maple Leaf and Vienna Philharmonic by 22K vs. pure 24K. Each coin contains identical 31.1035 g fine gold, but total mass is 2.8 g higher. From an investment angle, market price depends solely on gold content.

In a gold portfolio Eagle holds the core holding position - foundation that for most investors makes up 50-70% of physical gold position.

Obverse - Saint-Gaudens' Lady Liberty

Obverse depicts Lady Liberty walking forward with torch and olive branch against sunrays. Adapted from Augustus Saint-Gaudens' Double Eagle 20 USD (1907-1933), considered by many numismatists the most beautiful US coin in history. Inscriptions: LIBERTY · 2025 · 50.

Reverse - Eagle portrait (2021 redesign)

Reverse shows portrait of bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus). 2021 redesign by Jennie Norris replaced original Miley Busiek nest design (1986-2021). Inscriptions: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA · E PLURIBUS UNUM · IN GOD WE TRUST · 1 OZ. FINE GOLD ~ 50 DOLLARS.

FAQ

Why is Eagle .9167 not .9999?

Crown Gold 22K is British heritage from 1300, used in English Sovereigns and US Double Eagles. Silver and copper add mechanical durability. Fine gold content is identical to Buffalo - 1 oz.

Is Eagle subject to VAT?

No. Despite 22K alloy, Eagle meets investment gold criteria (EU Directive 98/80/EC) - coin minted after 1800, fineness min .900/1000.

What changed in the 2021 design?

First redesign in Eagle history - after 35 years. Reverse Miley Busiek (eagle nest) replaced by eagle portrait by Jennie Norris. Latent security features added.

How does Eagle compare to Krugerrand?

Identical fineness 22K, identical 1 oz gold content. Eagle has higher global liquidity in Europe and Asia.

Where to resell Eagle fastest?

GoldInvest24 operates active buyback at spot gold price plus dealer margin. Highest liquidity yields one of the lowest buyback spreads among bullion coins.
