Why this coin

  • Divisibility — 10 coins = 1 ounce; when selling, you release exactly as much gold as you need, in 3.11 g steps.
  • Low entry point — one coin costs a fraction of a one-ounce coin and is still 999.9 gold from an LBMA-accredited mint.
  • Full security on 16.5 mm — latent image, tincture lines, micro-text and background animation are all present on this small flan.
  • The 40th anniversary year — the 2027 date and 40 mark set this coin apart from tenth-ounce Britannias of earlier years.
  • As a gift — small, light and with a concrete story: 40 years of the series and the portrait of the new monarch.

The series at a glance

The gold Britannia has 40 years of issues behind it: The Royal Mint launched it in 1987. Until 2012 it was 22 carat (916.7); since 2013 it has been struck in 999.9 gold. In 2021 the die gained optical security features, and later the portrait of King Charles III took over the obverse.

Obverse — Charles III on a 16.5 mm flan

The portrait of Charles III by Martin Jennings keeps the same layout on the tenth-ounce as on the larger sizes, simply scaled down. The M.J. initials below the bust measure a fraction of a millimetre here — you will not read them without a loupe.

Reverse — Britannia and the hidden 40

The Britannia of Philip Nathan — with trident and Union Flag shield — fills most of the reverse field. The 2027 year adds the wave privy mark with the number 40 and a background designed so that the 40 appears in the light and changes with movement. On 16.5 mm the effect is subtle: it shows best under a point light source with slow turning.

The security features used on the Britannia since 2021 are complete at this size too: a latent image switching between padlock and trident, tincture lines on the shield, the micro-text DECUS ET TUTAMEN and the surface animation of the background.

What to consider before buying

  • Highest cost per gram in the series. Of the four Britannia sizes, the tenth-ounce usually carries the highest premium per gram of gold — divisibility comes at a price. If you are buying larger amounts for the metal alone, the 1 oz coin costs less per gram.
  • Small, thin flan. At 1.17 mm and 3.11 g of soft 999.9 gold, the coin scratches and goes missing easily. Keep coins in capsules or a tube.
  • Confusion with other tenths. The American Gold Eagle 1/10 oz measures 16.5 mm, the Krugerrand 16.55 mm, the Philharmonic 16 mm. You can tell the Britannia by its £10 face value, the NATHAN signature and the 40 mark.
  • CGT in the UK only. The Capital Gains Tax exemption applies to UK tax residents.

Frequently asked questions

How much gold does the Britannia 1/10 oz 2027 contain?

The coin contains 3.11 g of 999.9 fine gold, one tenth of a troy ounce. It measures 16.5 mm, is 1.17 mm thick and has a £10 face value.

Why is the price per gram higher than for the Britannia 1 oz?

The cost of striking and handling one coin is spread over less gold. That is why ten 1/10 oz coins usually cost more than one 1 oz coin with the same metal content.

Does the Britannia 1/10 oz have the same security features as the ounce?

Yes. It has the padlock/trident latent image, tincture lines, the micro-text DECUS ET TUTAMEN and a background animation. On 16.5 mm they are smaller, so you need a loupe for the micro-text.

Does the 1/10 oz coin carry the anniversary 40 mark?

Yes. The 2027 year has a wave privy mark with the number 40 and the 40 in the background, marking 40 years of the gold Britannia since 1987.

Is the Britannia 1/10 oz VAT-exempt?

Yes. It is a 999.9 fine gold coin and VAT-exempt under EU Directive 2006/112/EC (art. 344-356). The current gold price is on the gold price page.
