Platinum coins — 999.5 fine, one ounce and fractional

Number of products: 6

Every platinum bullion coin listed here is 999.5 fine. That is the platinum standard, not the 999.9 that gold buyers are used to — the London Platinum and Palladium Market sets 99.95 per cent as the minimum for good delivery, and the mints follow it.

Six coins from four mints: The Perth Mint, Münze Österreich, the United States Mint and the Royal Canadian Mint. Weights run from 1.24 g up to one troy ounce. Bars in the same two metals are on the platinum and palladium page.

What is in this category

Figures below are the mints' own published specifications. Where a mint does not publish a value the cell says so rather than repeating a dealer estimate.

Coin Mint Fineness Gross weight Diameter Face value Struck since
Australian Kangaroo 1 oz The Perth Mint 99.95 31.119 g minimum 32.60 mm max. AUD 100 2018
Lunar III Year of the Horse 1 oz The Perth Mint 99.95 31.119 g minimum 32.60 mm max. AUD 100 2026 issue, mintage 5,000
Vienna Philharmonic 1 oz Münze Österreich 999.5 31.10 g 37.00 mm EUR 100 2016
Vienna Philharmonic 1/25 oz Münze Österreich 999.5 1.24 g 13.00 mm EUR 4 not published separately
American Platinum Eagle 1 oz United States Mint 999.5 31.120 g 32.70 mm USD 100 1997
Platinum Maple Leaf 1 oz Royal Canadian Mint 99.95 31.11 g 30 mm CAD 50 1988

None of the four mints publishes a thickness figure for its platinum coin. The Perth Mint publishes a maximum of 2.90 mm for both of its one-ounce coins; the other three publish diameter and weight only.

Why platinum coins are 999.5 and not 999.9

In gold, 999.9 is the retail norm. In platinum it is not. The London Platinum and Palladium Market sets the minimum acceptable fineness for good delivery plates and ingots at 99.95 per cent, and that figure has become the number the coin mints strike to. A platinum coin marked 999.5 is not a lower grade of the same thing gold buyers know — it is the market standard for the metal.

The practical consequence is that fineness is not a differentiator between these six coins. What separates them is diameter, design policy and how easy each one is to sell on.

Three coins with a fixed design, one that changes every year

The Kangaroo has carried the same bounding-kangaroo reverse since the series began in 2018; only the year-date moves. The Platinum Maple Leaf has run the same maple-leaf reverse with radial lines and a micro-engraved leaf since 1988. The United States Mint changes the reverse of the proof Platinum Eagle each year but keeps the Liberty obverse and soaring eagle reverse on the bullion coin.

The Lunar Series III coin is the exception. Each year takes a different animal from the Chinese zodiac — 2026 is the Horse, designed by Ing Ing Jong — and the 2026 issue is capped at 5,000 pieces. That is a mintage limit the other coins in this category do not have.

Palladium: bars only at the moment

This category is named for both metals, but every coin currently listed is platinum. Palladium is stocked as bars — Valcambi and Argor-Heraeus — on the platinum and palladium page. If you came here looking for a palladium coin, that is the honest answer: there is not one in stock right now.

VAT and UK capital gains tax

The UK VAT exemption for bullion covers gold bullion and nothing else. HMRC defines gold bullion in VAT Notice 701/21 as gold of a purity of not less than 995 thousandths in bar or wafer form, or a gold coin minted after 1800 meeting the stated tests. Platinum does not fall inside that definition, so platinum coins carry VAT at the standard rate, currently 20 per cent in the UK and 23 per cent in Poland.

Capital gains tax is a separate question with a separate answer. HMRC exempts sterling currency, which is why post-1837 Sovereigns and gold Britannias are free of CGT for UK residents. An American Platinum Eagle is US legal tender, a Philharmonic is Austrian, a Maple Leaf is Canadian and a Kangaroo is Australian. None of them is sterling, so none of them carries the exemption. This is a statement of the published rule, not tax advice — your own position depends on your circumstances.

Questions buyers ask about platinum coins

Is 999.5 platinum lower quality than 999.9 gold? No. 99.95 per cent is the London good delivery minimum for platinum and the standard the mints strike to. There is no widely produced 999.9 platinum bullion coin.

Which of these coins is the largest across? The Vienna Philharmonic, at 37.00 mm. The Perth Mint coins are up to 32.60 mm, the American Eagle 32.70 mm and the Maple Leaf 30 mm — the same ounce of metal pressed into noticeably different footprints.

Are platinum coins VAT-free in the UK? No. The exemption in VAT Notice 701/21 applies to gold bullion only, so platinum is standard-rated at 20 per cent.

Is a platinum coin exempt from UK capital gains tax? Not the ones listed here. The exemption follows sterling legal tender; these coins are Australian, Austrian, American and Canadian legal tender.

Do you buy platinum coins back? Yes, quoted against the current platinum price. See the buyback page.
