Gold for first communion

Number of products: 27

First communion falls at an age where the child can understand what the gift is, which changes what works. A coin with a design and a country behind it explains itself; a plain ingot does not. The usual range here is 2.5 g to 10 g, a step up from a christening present.

Everything is sealed in an assay card or a capsule and is exempt from VAT. Smaller and larger formats from the same range are listed too.

Coins explain themselves better than bars

At this age the gift is often kept by the child rather than filed away by a parent. A 1 g Chinese Panda gold coin or a 1/10 oz Maple Leaf carries a mint, a year and a motif that changes annually — things a child can ask about. A bar of the same weight is cheaper per gram but says less.

If the point is the metal rather than the object, a 5 g Argor-Heraeus Kinebar or a 10 g PAMP Fortuna bar gives noticeably more gold for the same outlay.

Where the premium sits

Format Gold Premium over spot
1 g coin 1 g highest
2.5 g to 5 g bar 2.5–5 g high
1/10 oz coin 3.11 g high
10 g bar 10 g moderate

The pattern holds throughout: minting cost is close to fixed per piece, so it weighs most heavily on the smallest formats. A 10 g gold bar is the point where the premium stops dominating.

A gift meant to be split

The 25 x 1 g Maple Leaf MapleGram is a sheet of twenty five separable one gram coins. It works where one gift is meant to cover several occasions over the years rather than one day.

Tax

All gold here is exempt from VAT — bars of at least 995 fineness and coins that meet the EU criteria for exempt gold coins — under Council Directive 2006/112/EC across the EU, and art. 122 in Poland. UK capital gains tax exemption is separate and covers only Royal Mint sterling coins.

Questions buyers ask

What is a typical first communion gift in gold?

Usually 2.5 g to 10 g. A 1 g or 1/10 oz coin is the common choice when the gift is meant to be looked at; a 5 g or 10 g bar when it is meant to hold value.

Coin or bar for a communion gift?

A coin has a mint, a year and a design, which makes it more interesting to a child. A bar of the same weight costs less per gram. Both are sealed and both are VAT-free.

Can the gift be divided later?

Yes, if you choose a multigram set. The 25 x 1 g Maple Leaf MapleGram separates into individual one gram coins by hand.

Is the packaging important?

Yes. The sealed assay card or capsule carries the serial number and the assay, and keeping it intact is what makes the piece straightforward to sell later.
