50 g silver bars
Number of products: 1Fifty grams of silver is 4.77 cm³ — about the volume of a large sugar lump, and 1.84 times the space the same mass of gold would take.
One product at this weight: a 999 bar from Nadir Metal Rafineri, on the LBMA silver Good Delivery list since 20 June 2012. Live quotes on the silver price page.
Where the premium starts to behave
Manufacturing a bar — rolling, pressing, stamping, sealing — costs roughly the same at any size. That fixed cost dominates the price of a 5 g or 10 g silver bar and becomes almost invisible at a kilogram. Fifty grams is where the curve starts to flatten: still short of the efficiency of 250 g or 500 g, but a clear step down from the small sizes.
It is also a weight you can sell whole without releasing a large position, which is the practical argument for it over 100 g or 250 g.
One producer at this weight
| Producer | Fineness | LBMA silver accreditation | Dimensions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nadir Metal Rafineri | 999 | Bahçelievler, Istanbul — 20 June 2012 | not published at this weight |
Nadir publishes dimensions for its kilo bar — 62 × 128 × 12.5 mm — but not for 50 g, so no figure is quoted here. Dimensions circulating on dealer sites for this size do not come from the refinery.
Why silver bars are 999 and not 999.9
The London Good Delivery standard for silver sets a minimum of 999.0. In gold, 999.9 is the retail baseline and anything less is an alloy choice; in silver it is the reverse — 999 is what the wholesale market runs on and what most refineries produce, and 999.9 is a differentiator. The gap is one part in a thousand.
A retail bar is not a Good Delivery bar
The London Good Delivery silver bar weighs around 1,000 troy ounces — roughly 32 kg — at a minimum 999.0 fineness. The LBMA states that kilobars and smaller are not acceptable in the London wholesale market. A 50 g bar is far below that, and the accreditation belongs to the refinery that made it rather than to the bar. The correct word is accreditation, not certificate.
VAT on silver in the United Kingdom
The UK exemption for bullion covers gold bullion only, defined in VAT Notice 701/21 as gold of a purity of not less than 995 thousandths in bar or wafer form, or a qualifying gold coin. Silver is standard-rated — 20 per cent in the United Kingdom, 23 per cent in Poland. Statement of the published rule, not tax advice.
Questions buyers ask about this weight
Is 50 g better value than 10 g?
Per gram, yes. The manufacturing cost per bar is largely fixed, so it falls as a share of the price as the bar gets heavier. The step from 10 g to 50 g is one of the bigger improvements in the range.
How big is a 50 g silver bar?
Nadir does not publish dimensions at this weight. The volume is fixed at 4.77 cm³, against 2.59 cm³ for the same mass of gold.
Is there more than one producer at 50 g?
Not here. Nadir Metal Rafineri is the only 50 g silver bar in stock.
Does silver carry VAT?
Yes, at the standard rate — 20 per cent in the UK, 23 per cent in Poland. Only gold bullion is exempt.
Do you buy 50 g silver bars back?
Yes, quoted against the current silver price. See the buyback page.
