Platinum bars and palladium bars — 999.5 fine

Number of products: 15

Platinum and palladium bars are struck to 999.5, not the 999.9 used for gold. The London Platinum and Palladium Market sets 99.95 per cent as the good delivery minimum for both metals, and the refineries work to it.

Stocked here: platinum from 1 g to 100 g plus a one-ounce bar and a 50 × 1 g CombiBar, and palladium in 5 g and one ounce. Producers are Valcambi, PAMP and Argor-Heraeus. Coins in the same two metals are on the platinum and palladium coins page.

Weights stocked and who makes them

Metal Weights in stock Producers Fineness
Platinum 1 g, 2.5 g, 5 g, 10 g, 20 g, 50 g, 100 g, 1 oz, 50 × 1 g CombiBar Valcambi, PAMP (Lady Fortuna), mixed LPPM refiners at 100 g 999.5
Palladium 5 g, 1 oz Valcambi, Argor-Heraeus 999.5

One product is listed as 100 g platinum bar, various LPPM producers. That is deliberate: at that weight the bar shipped may come from any refinery on the London Platinum and Palladium Market good delivery list, and the metal content and fineness are identical whichever arrives. If you need a specific brand, choose a named-producer bar instead.

Why there are no dimensions on this page

Valcambi publishes weights and fineness for its minted bars and no dimensions at all — not for platinum, not for palladium, not for any size. PAMP's platinum Fortuna pages carry no published specification table either. Figures for these bars circulate on dealer sites, but they do not come from the refineries, so they are not repeated here.

What can be said with confidence: platinum is denser than gold at 21.45 g/cm³ against 19.32, so a platinum bar of a given weight is slightly smaller than the gold bar you may be picturing. Palladium runs the other way at about 12.0 g/cm³ — a palladium bar is noticeably larger than a gold bar of the same mass.

Accreditation belongs to the refinery, not to the bar

Valcambi, MKS PAMP and Argor-Heraeus are all on the current London Platinum and Palladium Market good delivery lists for both platinum and palladium. That accreditation applies to the refinery, and to the wholesale plates and ingots it produces — the market's good delivery bar runs from 1 kg to 6 kg at a minimum 99.95 per cent fineness.

A 5 g or 100 g retail bar is not a good delivery bar and no refinery claims it is. What the accreditation tells you is that the producer is audited and accepted by the London market. The correct word is accreditation, not certificate.

Worth knowing if you are comparing dealers: Umicore is not on the current LPPM lists for either metal. It appears under former refiners. Umicore remains accredited for gold and silver with the LBMA, which is where the confusion tends to come from.

The CombiBar and how it is packaged

The Valcambi platinum CombiBar is a 50 g bar scored into fifty 1 g pieces that can be separated into single grams or groups. Valcambi seals it in a PETG blister with a serial-numbered assay certificate. It exists for divisibility — selling 5 g of a 50 g holding without breaking up the whole position — and that convenience is paid for in a higher premium per gram than a plain 50 g bar.

VAT on platinum and palladium

The UK VAT exemption for bullion covers gold bullion only. HMRC defines gold bullion in VAT Notice 701/21 as gold of a purity of not less than 995 thousandths in bar or wafer form of a weight accepted by the bullion markets, or a qualifying gold coin. Platinum and palladium fall outside it, so both carry VAT at the standard rate — currently 20 per cent in the United Kingdom and 23 per cent in Poland.

Capital gains tax relief does not apply either. The UK exemption follows sterling legal tender, and a bar is not currency in any country. This states the published rule and is not tax advice.

Questions buyers ask about platinum and palladium bars

Why are these bars 999.5 and not 999.9? Because 99.95 per cent is the London good delivery minimum for platinum and palladium, and it is what the refineries produce. Valcambi states 999.5 for both metals on its own minted-bar page.

How big is a 100 g platinum bar? Neither Valcambi nor PAMP publishes dimensions for platinum, so there is no manufacturer figure to quote. Platinum's density of 21.45 g/cm³ means it occupies about 10 per cent less volume than the same mass of gold.

Is a retail bar an LPPM good delivery bar? No. Good delivery plates and ingots run from 1 kg to 6 kg. The accreditation belongs to the refinery that made your bar, not to the bar itself.

Do platinum and palladium bars carry VAT? Yes, at the standard rate — 20 per cent in the UK, 23 per cent in Poland. Only gold bullion is exempt.

Do you buy platinum and palladium bars back? Yes, quoted against the current metal price. See the buyback page.
