1 oz silver coins

Number of products: 27

Every coin in this category holds the same troy ounce — 31.1035 g of silver. What differs is fineness, how wide the coin is, whether the design changes each year, and whether it is exempt from UK capital gains tax.

Thirteen series are listed here, from the Britannia and Maple Leaf to the Kookaburra, Koala, Lunar Horse and Noah's Ark. The comparison below is the fastest way to see what separates them. Live quotes on the silver price page.

The other series in stock — Kookaburra, Koala, Lunar Series III Year of the Horse, Noah's Ark, Somali Elephant, The Angel, a Star Wars Darth Vader coin and a silver Bitcoin coin — each hold the same ounce. Their specifications are on the individual series pages linked below rather than repeated here.

Same ounce, very different footprints

The Philharmonic is 37 mm across and the Kangaroo is 40.90 mm — nearly 4 mm of difference for identical metal content. The wider coin is thinner, the narrower one thicker. This matters in two practical ways: capsules and tubes are not interchangeable between series, and a wide thin coin shows handling marks more readily than a compact one.

Fineness: 999 is the norm, 9999 is the exception

The London Good Delivery standard for silver sets a minimum of 999.0, so 999 is what the market runs on. Two series here go further: the Maple Leaf has been 9999 since 1988, and the Kangaroo is 9999. The difference is one part in ten thousand and does not change how either coin is priced.

The one difference that can change what you keep

HMRC does not treat sterling currency as a chargeable asset — the rule sits at TCGA92/S21(1)(b), with the Capital Gains Manual at CG78305 confirming that coins which are currency but not sterling are chargeable. A Britannia carries a £2 face value and is UK legal tender, so it falls inside that rule. A Maple Leaf, Krugerrand, Philharmonic, Kangaroo or Eagle does not.

For a UK resident this is the single largest structural difference between the coins on this page, and it does not show up in the price. It is a statement of the published rule, not tax advice — your own position depends on your circumstances.

Fixed design or new every year

Some series keep the same reverse indefinitely: the Krugerrand's springbok, the Maple Leaf's maple, the Philharmonic's instruments. Others change annually — the Kookaburra, the Koala, the Lunar series and the Somali Elephant among them.

A fixed design means a mixed-year lot is interchangeable and easy to price. An annually changing design means the year identifies the artwork, individual years can trade above metal, and a mixed-year lot is a mixed-design lot. Neither is better; they are different products wearing the same weight.

VAT on silver in the United Kingdom

The UK exemption for bullion covers investment gold only, defined in VAT Notice 701/21 as gold of a purity of not less than 995 thousandths in bar or wafer form, or a qualifying gold coin. Silver coins are standard-rated — 20 per cent in the United Kingdom, 23 per cent in Poland. That applies to the Britannia as much as to any other silver coin; the CGT position and the VAT position are separate questions with different answers.

Questions buyers ask

Which 1 oz silver coin is exempt from UK capital gains tax?

The Britannia, because it is sterling legal tender. Coins denominated in Canadian dollars, rand, euro, Australian dollars or US dollars are chargeable assets under HMRC CG78305.

Do all these coins contain the same amount of silver?

Yes — one troy ounce, 31.1035 g. Fineness varies between 999 and 9999, which changes the trace content but not the ounce.

Why are the diameters different?

Each mint chooses its own format. The same ounce is 37 mm across on a Philharmonic and 40.90 mm on a Kangaroo, so the Kangaroo is the thinner coin. Capsules and tubes are not interchangeable between series.

Is 9999 silver better than 999?

Not in any way that affects price or liquidity. The London standard for silver requires only 999.0, and both are bullion silver.

Do you buy 1 oz silver coins back?

Yes, quoted against the current silver price. See the buyback page.
