What is in stock at 500 g

Neither producer publishes dimensions for its silver bars. Valcambi lists weights and fineness only. Nadir publishes a figure for its kilo bar but not for 500 g. Dimensions circulating on dealer sites do not come from the refineries, so they are not quoted here.

Where the premium curve flattens

Rolling, pressing, stamping and sealing a bar cost roughly the same at any size. That fixed cost dominates the price of a 5 g or 10 g silver bar and becomes almost invisible at a kilogram. Five hundred grams is well down that curve: the percentage premium is close to what you pay at 1 kg and far below what a 5 g or 1 oz bar carries.

The trade-off is granularity. A 500 g bar is sold whole. If you may need to release part of a holding, two 250 g bars or a divisible 100 g format give you that option at a slightly higher cost per gram.

Cast and minted are different processes

A cast bar is poured into a mould and keeps the surface texture that leaves — slightly irregular, often with a rougher face. A minted bar is cut from a rolled strip and pressed, which gives flat faces, sharp edges and usually a sealed pack. Valcambi's 500 g here is minted.

Neither process affects the metal. At larger sizes cast bars tend to be marginally cheaper because the process is simpler, and minted bars present better and travel better in their packaging.

Why silver bars are 999 and not 999.9

The London Good Delivery standard for silver sets a minimum of 999.0, so 999 is the wholesale norm and what most refineries produce. Valcambi offers 999.90 on some lines; Nadir works at 999. The gap is one part in a thousand.

A retail bar is not a Good Delivery bar

The London Good Delivery silver bar weighs around 1,000 troy ounces — roughly 32 kg — at a minimum 999.0 fineness. The LBMA states that kilobars and smaller are not acceptable in the London wholesale market, and 500 g is well below that. The accreditation belongs to the refinery, not to the bar.

VAT on silver in the United Kingdom

The UK exemption for bullion covers gold bullion only. HMRC defines it in VAT Notice 701/21 as gold of a purity of not less than 995 thousandths in bar or wafer form, or a qualifying gold coin. Silver falls outside, so it carries VAT at the standard rate — 20 per cent in the United Kingdom, 23 per cent in Poland. That is why the gap between the spot price and the shelf price is wider in silver than in gold. Statement of the published rule, not tax advice.

Questions buyers ask about this weight

How large is a 500 g silver bar?

Neither Nadir nor Valcambi publishes dimensions for silver at this weight. The volume is fixed at 47.66 cm³ — roughly 1.84 times the space the same mass of gold would take.

Is 500 g cheaper per gram than 100 g?

Yes. The manufacturing cost per bar is largely fixed, so the larger the bar the smaller that cost is as a share of the price. The saving between 500 g and 1 kg is much smaller than the saving between 100 g and 500 g.

Cast or minted — does it matter?

Not to the metal. Minted bars have flat pressed faces and sealed packaging; cast bars are poured and have a rougher surface. Valcambi's 500 g is minted.

Does silver carry VAT?

Yes, at the standard rate — 20 per cent in the UK, 23 per cent in Poland. Only gold bullion is exempt.
