Australian Kangaroo Gold Coins
Number of products: 13The Perth Mint publishes its tolerances rather than nominal figures: the one-ounce Kangaroo is a maximum of 32.60 mm across and a maximum of 2.95 mm thick, at a minimum weight of 31.107 g and 999.9 fineness. No other mint in this range states its coins that way.
Its reverse is redrawn every year in the sizes up to one ounce — one of only two series here that does this, the other being the Chinese Panda. Buying a Kangaroo means buying a specific year's design.
Specification
Eight sizes, from a twentieth of an ounce to a full kilogram, all at 999.9. The Perth Mint publishes complete figures for the one-ounce coin; for the other sizes it publishes gold content and denomination. Face values for the fractional and large-format coins are as published by the mint and are not proportional to the one-ounce denomination.

Nugget, then Kangaroo
The series began in 1986 as the Australian Nugget, with reverses showing real Australian gold nuggets. The kangaroo replaced them from the 1989 proof issue. The bullion changeover year is reported inconsistently across dealer sources, so we state the proof date, which is documented, rather than a bullion date that is not.
The annual redesign applies to the sizes from a twentieth of an ounce to one ounce. The large formats introduced in 1991 — two ounce, ten ounce and one kilogram — keep a fixed red kangaroo design.
The 2026 issue
The reverse is by Neil Hollis and shows two kangaroos beside water, with a "40" privy mark for the fortieth year of the series. The obverse carries the Charles III effigy by Dan Thorne — a different portrait from the Martin Jennings effigy used on UK coins and the Steven Rosati effigy used in Canada, because each realm commissions its own.
The Perth Mint states that the bullion Kangaroo has unlimited mintage, so scarcity is not part of the pricing.
Perth Mint and the LBMA
Gold Corporation, trading as The Perth Mint, is accredited by the LBMA for both gold and silver and is one of the seven Good Delivery Referees. That accreditation covers its refinery and its bars — including the one-ounce bar and cast bars listed here — rather than the coins, since no bullion coin is a Good Delivery product.
