Britannia 1/2 oz 2027 — half an ounce of gold with the anniversary 40
The 2027 half-ounce Britannia holds 15.55 g of 999.9 fine gold on a 27 mm flan with a £50 face value. Two of these coins make exactly one troy ounce. Like the whole 2027 gold range, it carries a wave privy mark with the number 40 — the marker The Royal Mint uses for 40 years of the gold Britannia, struck since 1987.

Why this coin
- The middle of the range — 15.55 g of gold ties up less capital per piece than 1 oz, yet the coin is clearly larger than the 1/4 and 1/10 oz.
- Simple arithmetic — 2 coins = 1 troy ounce, so the metal value is the ounce quote divided by two.
- Full security set — despite the smaller flan, the coin carries all four optical features of the one-ounce.
- Anniversary 40 — the 2027 year carries the mark for 40 years of the series.
- £50 face value — UK legal tender, exempt from Capital Gains Tax in the United Kingdom.
The series in brief: from 22 to 24 carat
The gold Britannia appeared in 1987 as the British answer to bullion coins from other countries. Until 2012 it was struck in 916.7 gold (22 carat); since 2013 in 999.9 gold. For the half-ounce this has a practical effect: older pieces contain the same fine gold but are heavier because of the added alloy metals. With the 2027 year you get a 24-carat coin.
Obverse with Charles III
The portrait of King Charles III is by Martin Jennings; his initials M.J. sit below the bust. On a 27 mm coin they are small but clearly legible under a 10x loupe — a useful check point, as fine lettering tends to blur into the field on weaker counterfeits.
The 2027 reverse — what changed for the anniversary
The Britannia of Philip Nathan is itself unchanged: a standing figure with a trident and a Union Flag shield, signed NATHAN. The 2027 year adds two anniversary details. One is the wave privy mark with the number 40. The other is a redesigned background: normally the waves only suggest movement, while on the 2027 coin they are arranged so that the number 40 emerges as the coin is turned in the light.
Around these details sit the four security features used on the Britannia since 2021: a latent image showing a padlock or the trident head depending on the angle; tincture lines on the shield; the micro-text DECUS ET TUTAMEN around the field; and the surface animation of the background.
What to consider before buying
- Two halves or one ounce. The same gold in two 1/2 oz coins usually costs more than in one 1 oz coin, because the premium per gram rises as the size falls. In return you can sell half of your holding separately.
- Thickness. We do not state a thickness, as we found no reliable source for the 2027 year. Diameter (27 mm) and weight are enough to check the coin.
- Similar diameters. The half-ounce Krugerrand (27.07 mm) and American Gold Eagle (27 mm) are almost the same size but struck in 22-carat gold with a different colour.
- CGT in the UK only. The Capital Gains Tax exemption applies to UK tax residents.

Frequently asked questions
How much gold does the Britannia 1/2 oz 2027 contain?
The coin contains 15.55 g of 999.9 fine gold, half a troy ounce. It measures 27 mm in diameter and has a £50 face value.
Are two Britannia 1/2 oz coins the same as one 1 oz coin?
In gold content, yes — together they hold 31.1035 g. They differ in price per gram and flexibility: two halves usually cost more but can be sold one at a time.
Does the half-ounce carry the 40 mark too?
Yes. The wave privy mark with the number 40 and the 40 in the textured background are features of the 2027 gold Britannia range, marking 40 years of the series.
How does the Britannia 1/2 oz differ from the half-ounce Krugerrand?
Both contain 15.55 g of fine gold and have almost the same diameter. The Britannia is 999.9 fine with a £50 face value; the Krugerrand is 916.7 fine with no face value.
How can I recognise a genuine Britannia 1/2 oz?
Check the 27 mm diameter and the weight, then tilt the coin under light: the latent image should switch from padlock to trident and the number 40 should appear in the background. Use a loupe for the micro-text and the M.J. initials.
Is the Britannia 1/2 oz VAT-exempt?
Yes. It is a 999.9 fine gold coin and VAT-exempt under EU Directive 2006/112/EC (art. 344-356). The current metal value is on the gold price page.
