Why this coin

  • 7.78 g of gold per coin — a size that fits a smaller budget without dropping to tenth-ounce coins.
  • 4 coins = 1 ounce — when selling, you can release a quarter of your holding and keep the rest.
  • Confirmed dimensions — 22 mm diameter and 1.63 mm thickness, both easy to check with calipers.
  • Same design as the ounce — Jennings portrait, Nathan Britannia, the 40 mark and four security features at quarter-ounce scale.
  • £25 face value — UK legal tender status and CGT exemption in the United Kingdom.

The series in short

The Royal Mint has struck the gold Britannia since 1987. The opening 26 years were 916.7 fine; since 2013 the coin has been made from 999.9 gold. From 2021 the die gained four optical security features, and on the obverse the portrait of Charles III replaced the effigy of Elizabeth II. The 2027 year adds anniversary details to the reverse.

Obverse — the portrait of Charles III

The portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings fills a 22 mm field on the quarter-ounce. The M.J. initials below the bust are noticeably smaller here than on the ounce, so a loupe helps when checking them.

Reverse — Britannia with the anniversary 40

Britannia by Philip Nathan stands with a trident and a Union Flag shield; the NATHAN signature remains on the reverse. For 2027 the mint added a wave mark with the number 40 and rebuilt the background texture so that the 40 shows in the light and shifts as you turn the coin.

The 22 mm coin carries the same four security features as the ounce:

  • latent image — padlock or trident head depending on the viewing angle,
  • tincture lines on the shield,
  • micro-text DECUS ET TUTAMEN around the field,
  • surface animation — a background that seems to move, with the number 40 hidden in it for 2027.

What to consider before buying

  • Cost per gram. The quarter-ounce usually carries a higher premium per gram than the 1 oz coin and a lower one than the 1/10 oz. If you buy for metal only, compare four quarters with one ounce.
  • 22 mm is not unique. The quarter-ounce Philharmonic and American Gold Eagle measure 22 mm, the Krugerrand 22.06 mm. Check the Britannia by diameter, thickness (1.63 mm) and weight together.
  • Small-scale detail. The micro-text and the 40 in the background are finer on the quarter-ounce than on the ounce — use a loupe and good light.
  • CGT is a UK rule. The Capital Gains Tax exemption applies to UK tax residents.

Frequently asked questions

How much gold does the Britannia 1/4 oz 2027 contain?

The coin contains 7.78 g of 999.9 fine gold, a quarter of a troy ounce. It is 22 mm in diameter, 1.63 mm thick and has a £25 face value.

How many Britannia 1/4 oz coins make one ounce?

Four. Four quarter-ounces together hold 31.1035 g of gold, the same as one Britannia 1 oz, but together they usually cost more.

How does the 2027 year differ from earlier quarter-ounces?

The 2027 year has a wave privy mark with the number 40 and a background in which that number appears in the light. It marks 40 years of the gold Britannia, struck since 1987.

How do I check that a Britannia 1/4 oz is genuine?

Measure the 22 mm diameter and 1.63 mm thickness, weigh the coin, then tilt it under light — the latent image should switch from padlock to trident. Check the micro-text and the 40 in the background with a loupe.

Does the Britannia 1/4 oz have a face value, and what does it mean?

Yes, £25. The face value reflects its status as UK legal tender; the value of the coin, however, is set by its gold content.

Is the Britannia 1/4 oz VAT-exempt?

Yes. It is a 999.9 fine gold coin and VAT-exempt under EU Directive 2006/112/EC (art. 344-356). Current gold quotes are on the gold price page.
