Rand Refinery and the birth of the Krugerrand

Rand Refinery is a South African refinery founded in 1920 in Germiston near Johannesburg by the Witwatersrand gold mining consortium. In the 1970s, South Africa accounted for over 70% of global gold production. LBMA Good Delivery accredited.

The Krugerrand was conceived as a response to South Africa's gold export problem. The South African government with South African Mint and Rand Refinery invented the revolutionary concept of a bullion coin as "gold with face value". The first issue on July 3, 1967 marks the beginning of the modern gold investment market.

The name "Krugerrand" combines Paul Kruger (3rd president of the Transvaal Republic) with the "rand" (South African currency since 1961). Springbok motif by Coert Steynberg; Kruger portrait by Otto Schultz.

Market analysis - "First Year" as a special category

Krugerrand 1967 combines three value layers: (1) bullion (1 oz fine gold), (2) numismatic (first-year vintage), (3) historical (birth of modern gold market). Mintage 40,000 - significantly less than later years (1968: 80K; 1974: 3 million).

Market premium over spot typically 10-30%, MS-65+ condition 50-100%.

Obverse - Paul Kruger

Obverse depicts Paul Kruger (1825-1904), 3rd president of the Transvaal Republic 1883-1900. Led the Boers in the Second Boer War against the British Empire. Portrait by Otto Schultz. Inscriptions: SUID-AFRIKA · SOUTH AFRICA.

Reverse - Springbok

Reverse depicts the springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis), national animal of South Africa. Design by Coert Steynberg. Inscriptions: KRUGERRAND · 1967 · 1 OZ FINE GOLD · FYNGOUD.
