1/10 oz Gold Maple Leaf — 9999 from the Royal Canadian Mint
The Gold Maple Leaf is struck by the Royal Canadian Mint at .9999. The series started in 1979 at .999 and moved to four nines in 1982; the design — a single maple leaf with the weight and purity — has stayed the same ever since.
These are mixed-year coins. Weight and fineness are identical across years; only the date and the obverse effigy differ, which usually puts the premium below that of the current issue.

Two anti-counterfeiting features you can check
From 2013 the Royal Canadian Mint added a laser micro-engraved maple leaf to a small area of the reverse. Under magnification the year of issue appears inside it. From 2015 both faces carry radial lines — a precisely machined pattern that produces a light-diffracting effect difficult to copy.
Coins dated before those years do not have the features, which is worth knowing when you are looking at older stock.
Obverse
Coins dated up to 2023 carry the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II; from 2024 the obverse carries King Charles III.
VAT and UK capital gains tax
HMRC treats a coin minted after 1800 as investment gold if it is at least 900 thousandths fine, is or has been legal tender in its country of origin, and normally sells at no more than 180 per cent of the open market value of its gold (VAT Notice 701/21A). At .9999 and Canadian legal tender, this coin falls inside the exemption for investment gold.
Capital gains tax is separate: the UK exemption follows sterling legal tender, so it covers Sovereigns and Britannias but not a Canadian coin. This is the published rule, not tax advice — your own position depends on your circumstances.
Questions buyers ask
How do I check the micro-engraved leaf? With magnification, on the reverse. The year of issue is engraved inside it.
Do older coins have the radial lines? Only from 2015 onwards.
Can I choose the year? No. Mixed-year stock ships as available.
Is it VAT free in the UK? It meets HMRC's tests for an investment gold coin. It is not exempt from capital gains tax.
