1 kg Silver Bars
Number of products: 9A kilo of silver takes up 95.33 cm³. A kilo of gold takes up 51.76 cm³. The same mass of silver is therefore about 1.84 times the volume — which is why a 1 kg silver bar is a substantial object where a 1 kg gold bar fits in a hand.
Nadir Metal Rafineri casts its kilo bar at 62 × 128 × 12.5 mm. Valcambi and Argor-Heraeus, the other two producers stocked at this weight, do not publish dimensions for their silver. All are 999, and all are far larger than a gold bar of the same weight.
Dimensions at one kilogram
Where a refinery publishes its own specification we use it. Where it does not, the figure is a documented dealer specification and the row says so, or the cell stays empty.
| Producer | Dimensions | Form | Fineness | Serial number |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nadir Metal Rafineri | 62 × 128 × 12.5 mm | cast | 999 | yes, one letter and five digits |
| Valcambi | not published | minted or cast | 999.90 or 999.0 | not published |
| Argor-Heraeus | not published | cast | 999 | no |
| Royal Mint (not stocked here) | 54 × 118 × 15 mm | cast | 999 | yes |
| Perth Mint (not stocked here) | 99.00 × 49.00 × 22.00 mm max. | cast | 999.9 | not published |
| Umicore (not stocked here) | 87 × 47 × 27 mm | cast | 999 | not published |
| Geiger Edelmetalle (not stocked here) | 91.2 × 91.2 × 12.0 mm, square | minted | 999 | yes, UV-fluorescent |
Valcambi and Argor-Heraeus do not publish dimensions for their silver. Argor-Heraeus is the one producer here confirmed not to stamp a serial number on silver at all. The Royal Mint and Geiger Edelmetalle rows are reference points: neither is stocked here, and neither appears on the LBMA Good Delivery list for silver — which says nothing about their fineness.
Why silver bars are 999 and not 999.9
In gold, 999.9 is the retail norm and anything less is an alloy choice. In silver it is the other way round. The London Good Delivery standard for silver sets a minimum of 999.0, so 999 is what the wholesale market runs on and what most refineries produce; 999.9 is a differentiator, not a baseline.
Nadir Metal Rafineri, Argor-Heraeus, PAMP and Metalor all work at 999. Valcambi offers 999.90 or 999.0 depending on the line, and the Perth Mint casts at 999.9. All of it is bullion silver — the difference is roughly one part in a thousand.
A retail bar is not a Good Delivery bar
The London Good Delivery silver bar weighs around 1,000 troy ounces — roughly 32 kg — at a minimum fineness of 999.0, measuring about 300 × 130 × 80 mm with tapered sides. The LBMA states plainly that kilobars, 100-ounce bars and smaller are not acceptable in the London wholesale market.
The accreditation belongs to the refinery, not to the bar. Nadir Metal Rafineri, Valcambi, Argor-Heraeus, PAMP, Metalor, Umicore and the Perth Mint all appear on the LBMA Good Delivery list for silver; the bars here are their retail production, not London bars.
VAT on silver in the United Kingdom
The UK VAT exemption for bullion covers gold and nothing else. HMRC defines investment gold in VAT Notice 701/21 as gold of a purity of not less than 995 thousandths in the form of a bar or wafer, or a gold coin minted after 1800 of a purity of not less than 900 thousandths. Silver is not investment gold and does not fall inside that exemption, so silver bullion carries VAT at the standard rate, currently 20 per cent.
That single difference is why silver costs noticeably more in the UK than on the continent, and why the premium on a silver bar looks wide next to a gold one. It is a statement of the published rule, not tax advice. What applies to a particular cross-border order depends on the import rules in force at the time, so it is worth checking the position before ordering rather than assuming it.
Tarnish
Silver darkens because hydrogen sulphide in the air forms silver sulphide on the surface. It is not oxidation, and it removes no metal — the bar weighs what it weighed. The full explanation is on the 100 g page.
What you actually pay
A kilogram of silver at the market price, plus the refinery premium, plus our margin. The making cost of a bar changes little with its weight, so it spreads over more metal here than in any smaller format. Live figures on the silver price page.
Questions buyers ask about this weight
How much is a 1 kg silver bar worth?
A thousand times the silver price per gram, plus the premium on that bar. One kilo is 32.15 troy ounces.
How big is a 1 kg silver bar?
It varies by producer: 62 × 128 × 12.5 mm at Nadir Metal Rafineri, 54 × 118 × 15 mm at the Royal Mint, up to 99 × 49 × 22 mm at the Perth Mint. All hold 95.33 cm³ of metal.
Why is it so much bigger than a 1 kg gold bar?
Because silver is less dense — 10.49 g/cm³ against 19.32 g/cm³ for gold. The same mass takes up about 1.84 times the volume.
Is a 1 kg bar a Good Delivery bar?
No. The London Good Delivery silver bar is around 1,000 troy ounces, roughly 32 kg, and the LBMA states that kilobars and smaller are not acceptable in the London wholesale market.
What fineness should I expect?
999 in most cases. The London standard for silver requires only 999.0, so 999 is the norm; the Perth Mint casts at 999.9 and Valcambi offers 999.90 on some lines.
Do you buy 1 kg silver bars back?
Yes, quoted against the current silver price. Cast bars are sold whole, so the entire kilo moves in one transaction. See the buyback page.
