1/4 oz American Gold Eagle 2025 — 22 carat crown gold
The American Gold Eagle is struck in crown gold: 22 carat, .9167 fine, with silver and copper added to make the coin more wear-resistant. A 1/4 oz Eagle therefore weighs 8.483 g gross while holding 7.776 g of pure gold. US law requires the gold to come from sources in the United States.

Obverse — Saint-Gaudens' Liberty
The obverse uses Augustus Saint-Gaudens' Liberty: she strides forward with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, the Capitol building behind her on the left. The design was made for the 1907 double eagle and has been on the bullion Eagle since 1986.
Reverse — the Type 2 eagle
From 1986 to 2021 the reverse showed a family of eagles by Miley Busiek Frost. Since 2021 the coin carries the Type 2 reverse: a close-up head portrait of an eagle, designed by Jennie Norris and sculpted by medallic artist Renata Gordon. Their initials JN and RG flank the design.
Coins dated 2021 and later carry the Type 2 reverse; earlier dates carry the family design. If the year matters to you, this is the difference to look for.
Why 22 carat rather than 999.9
A 1/4 oz Eagle contains exactly the same 7.776 g of pure gold as a 1/4 oz four-nines coin. It weighs more in total because of the silver and copper, and it stands up to handling better than a soft 999.9 coin — the same reasoning behind the Krugerrand and the Sovereign.
VAT and UK capital gains tax
HMRC treats a coin minted after 1800 as investment gold if it is at least 900 thousandths fine, is or has been legal tender in its country of origin, and normally sells at no more than 180 per cent of the open market value of its gold (VAT Notice 701/21A). At .9167 and US legal tender, this coin falls inside the exemption for investment gold.
Capital gains tax is separate: the UK exemption follows sterling legal tender, so it covers Sovereigns and Britannias but not an American coin. This is the published rule, not tax advice — your own position depends on your circumstances.
Questions buyers ask
Does 22 carat mean less gold? No. The coin holds 7.776 g of pure gold; the alloy simply adds weight.
What is Type 2? The eagle-head reverse introduced in 2021, replacing the eagle-family design used from 1986.
Is it VAT free in the UK? It meets HMRC's tests for an investment gold coin. It is not exempt from capital gains tax.
