1/4 oz Australian Kangaroo — the reverse that changes every year
The Australian Kangaroo is struck by The Perth Mint at 99.99 fineness. The series began in 1986 as the Australian Nugget; the kangaroo replaced the nugget on the reverse in 1989, and since then the mint has issued a new reverse design for every year.
These are mixed-year coins, shipped as stock allows. Every year holds the same weight and fineness — only the design and the date differ, which is what keeps the premium below that of the current issue.

The design
The obverse carries the effigy of King Charles III — Perth Mint credits the Australian effigy to Dan Thorne — with AUSTRALIA and the denomination.
The reverse differs by year. Coins dated before 2024 carry the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse instead.
VAT and UK capital gains tax
HMRC treats a coin minted after 1800 as investment gold if it is at least 900 thousandths fine, is or has been legal tender in its country of origin, and normally sells at no more than 180 per cent of the open market value of its gold (VAT Notice 701/21A). At 99.99 fine and Australian legal tender, this coin falls inside the exemption for investment gold.
Capital gains tax is separate: the UK exemption follows sterling legal tender, so it covers Sovereigns and Britannias but not an Australian coin. This is the published rule, not tax advice — your own position depends on your circumstances.
Questions buyers ask
Can I pick the year? No. Mixed-year stock ships as available, which is what keeps the price down. Ask us if you need a particular date.
Why does the reverse change? Perth Mint has issued a new kangaroo design annually since 1989. It is the defining feature of the series.
Is it VAT free in the UK? It meets HMRC's tests for an investment gold coin. It is not exempt from capital gains tax.
